![]() Then I allow the heavier weight to sink to the tank bottom, holding the moss in place. I like using paper toweling to do this.Ī few dabs of superglue is all it takes, as well as firm pressure for five seconds. Simply dry the moss and the object slightly. Superglue is great at sticking anything, and you can easily stick a large section of moss in place on a heavier object in the tank. Within three weeks, the moss should start to root.Ī second way is to use superglue. Winding the fishing line to tie the moss down, you cut off the extra line, then allow the heavier weight to hold the moss in place. This can be a tank ornament, a large piece of coral reef, or a stone. It involves using a fishing line to tie the moss to an anchor in the tank. The first way to ground your Java moss is the more traditional way. The sooner I ground my Java moss, the better it will grow. Tying it down or sticking it in place maybe your best option. This can be tricky as Java moss is quite buoyant, and it can easily float away, so it’s not just a simple matter of sticking a part in the soil and hoping it will grow. Overall, the anchoring process can take around three to four weeks. While you can float a growth of Java moss, it is best to anchor one end of the moss and use pruning scissors to ensure it grows naturally but without taking over the tank. ![]() The most difficult part of growing Java moss in your fish tank is to get it to attach and not simply float free in the tank. Typically, Java moss reproduces every 1-2 days, hence, in less than a month, a 3-inch patch can double in size.Īttaching and Growing Java Moss in Your Fish Tank It can grow to quite a size then, so I may need to trim it, as Java moss grows about 2-3mm per day. ![]() Once Java moss has attached to my tank and is securely anchored, which takes about 3-4 weeks, it can begin to fully grow. ![]() If a positive result is returned, the laboratory will provide a written certificate of the results and may recommend a course of action to follow. The lab will then analyze the sample to determine whether asbestos is present. It is important to note that a professional will have the equipment and safety protocols in place to ensure that asbestos fibers or particles are not accidentally released into the environment. This can be done either by taking a sample yourself and sending it to a laboratory for testing, or by hiring a professional to take a sample and send it away for testing. In order to test for asbestos in a ceiling, there are several steps that can be taken.įirst, it is important to collect a sample of the material in question and send it for testing. How do you test for asbestos in a ceiling? To ensure your safety, avoid disturbing the material, and do not attempt to remove it yourself. If you suspect that your ceiling tiles may contain asbestos, it is important to contact a licensed asbestos inspector to help you identify whether or not your tiles are, in fact, asbestos. While the color may be aesthetically pleasing, it is important to remember that asbestos in any color is dangerous and can be hazardous to your health.Īsbestos ceiling tiles were popularly used in the early 20th century, and even after it was banned in the late 1970s, there are still many buildings constructed before then that may have asbestos present in the ceilings today. What color is asbestos ceiling tile?Īsbestos ceiling tiles come in a variety of colors, including white, gray, brown, and even pink. Removing asbestos ceiling tiles can be costly, but it is important to consult a professional in order to ensure your own and your family’s safety. In addition, if the tiles are deteriorating, they need to be removed by a qualified professional with experience in safely removing asbestos products, who will test the material after it is removed to ensure that it is asbestos-free. While it is generally safe to leave non-friable (non-worsening) asbestos ceiling tiles that are in good condition, they should not be disturbed. Exposure to these fibers can cause serious, long term health issues such as aggressive forms of lung cancer and mesothelioma. Asbestos is a fibrous material composed of tiny mineral particles that, when disturbed, can release airborne fibers into the air. No, it is not safe to live in a house with asbestos ceiling tiles. Is it safe to live in a house with asbestos ceiling tiles? In general, modern ceiling tiles are made from non-toxic materials, meaning they do not emit dangerous fumes or chemicals that could cause cancer. If you are concerned about the safety of your ceiling tiles, it is best to have them tested and remove any tiles containing asbestos. While there can be potential health problems associated with certain types of ceiling tiles, such as those containing asbestos, these are rare and are usually only found in older buildings. No, generally speaking, ceiling tiles are not considered cancerous. To ensure the safety of your family it is best to hire an experienced asbestos abatement company to give you an accurate assessment of your ceiling tiles and the risks associated with any asbestos content. When collecting a sample, it is important to keep in mind that if the sample has more than 1% asbestos, it is considered potentially hazardous and must be handled by a certified asbestos abatement contractor. If you decide to collect a sample for testing, be sure to observe safety precautions such as wearing protective clothing and a respirator, and sealing the sample in a plastic bag before sending it off. To determine if your ceiling tiles contain asbestos, you can either collect a sample to bring to a testing facility for analysis or hire an asbestos abatement company to come to your home and test the ceiling tiles for you. One of the most common complaints voiced by editors regarding submitted manuscripts is that the authors neglect to write a well-written cover letter, including a statement justifying the importance of their work ( 6). ![]() Amongst the different steps of the publication process, the cover letter is the last step and is often overlooked ( 5). In fact, some high-quality and prestigious journals pay specific attention to the cover letter ( 3). Providing a cover letter alongside the submission process is now required by most scientific journals. In scientific writing and publishing, a cover/covering letter is a letter to the editor’s target journal ( 4). The cover letter is commonly known as a motivation letter submitted along with the curriculum vitae (CV) or a job application for employment ( 1) or academic position ( 2), and it is not clear why and how it was introduced into the scientific field ( 3). The Cambridge dictionary defines a cover letter as “a letter that contains information about the thing it is sent with”. Here, we provide a practical guide to draft a well-written, concise, and professional cover letter for a scientific medical paper. Spending enough time to draft an informative, comprehensive, and concise cover letter is quite worthwhile a poorly drafted one would not persuade the editor that the submitted work is fit for publication and may lead to immediate rejection. The letter also includes the contact information of the corresponding author (s) and may also include suggestions of potential reviewers. A typical cover letter includes the name of the editor and the journal, date of submission, the characteristics of the manuscript, the importance of the work and its relevance to prospective audiences, declarations such as author agreements, conflicts of interest statement, funding source (s), and ethical statements. ![]() A cover (covering) letter is a brief business letter introducing the scientific work alongside the submission process of a manuscript and is required by most scientific peer-review journals. Magi1 is a neural member of the membrane-associated guanylate kinase, or MAGUK, subfamily of PDZ proteins and contains six PDZ domains, a GUK domain, and two WW motifs ( Fig. Here, we reveal a pair of novel interactions between the PDZ-binding motif of delta-catenin and the proteins Magi1 and Pdlim5 and provide mechanistic insight into the processes underlying dendrite development. There is evidence that these roles of delta-catenin in dendrite growth are dependent upon its PDZ-binding motif, as loss of this region prevents the increased dendritic arborization induced by delta-catenin overexpression in neurons ( Arikkath et al., 2008). Overexpression of delta-catenin in NIH/3T3 cells, among other nonneuronal cell lines, induces the formation and branching of dendrite-like processes through the remodeling of actin and microtubules ( Kim et al., 2002 Kim et al., 2008a). In neurons, delta-catenin is required for proper dendrite development, as shRNA-mediated knockdown (KD) of delta-catenin leads to inhibition of both dendrite elongation and branching, while overexpression of delta-catenin results in increased dendritic length and complexity ( Martinez et al., 2003 Arikkath et al., 2008). Perturbations in the normal functioning of delta-catenin have been linked to several neurodevelopmental disorders, such as cri-du-chat syndrome, autism, and schizophrenia ( Medina et al., 2000 Vrijenhoek et al., 2008 Turner et al., 2015). Our findings implicate the neural catenin protein delta-catenin in controlling dendritic development following mGluR5 activation. We investigate mechanistic changes elicited by glutamate signaling, specifically through the receptor mGluR5. Despite the extensive evidence for glutamate and its metabotropic receptor’s roles in dendrite development, surprisingly little is known about the mechanisms downstream of its signaling in dendrites. Further, cultured neurons treated with the type 1 mGluR (mGluR1 and mGluR5) agonist 3,5-dihydroxyphenylglycine (DHPG) exhibit increased dendrite growth during early development ( Cruz-Martín et al., 2012). Both hippocampal and cortical neurons of mice lacking Grm5, the gene that encodes the glutamate receptor mGluR5, develop significantly less complex dendritic arbors than controls in vivo ( Ballester-Rosado et al., 2010 Loerwald et al., 2015). Cultured primary hippocampal neurons treated with glutamate develop significantly more complex dendritic arbors when compared with controls, whereas blocking activity of glutamate receptors results in the formation of less complex dendritic arbors ( Charych et al., 2006 Hamad et al., 2011 Previtera and Firestein, 2015). Namely, the neurotransmitter glutamate has been strongly implicated in the establishment of dendritic morphology ( Portera-Cailliau et al., 2003 Park et al., 2007 Ballester-Rosado et al., 2010). We thus reveal a “phospho-switch” within delta-catenin, subject to a glutamate-mediated signaling pathway, that assists in balancing the branching versus extension of dendrites during neural development.ĭendrite development is largely governed by the modulation of intracellular pathways by extracellular signaling cues ( Dong et al., 2015). Our data suggest that these complexes affect dendrite development by differentially regulating the small-GTPase RhoA and actin-associated protein Cortactin. Whereas the delta:Pdlim5 complex enhances dendrite branching at the expense of elongation, the delta:Magi1 complex instead promotes lengthening. The phosphorylation state of this motif determines delta-catenin’s ability to bind either Pdlim5 or Magi1. In it, glutamate signaling activates mGluR5 receptors to promote Ckd5-mediated phosphorylation of the C-terminal PDZ-binding motif of delta-catenin. Here, we report a new mechanism instructing dendrites to branch versus extend. While several known processes shape the arbor, little is known of those that govern dendrite branching versus extension. ![]() It is thus vital that, during development, the dendritic arbor is adequately formed to enable proper neural circuit formation and function. In neurons, dendrites form the major sites of information receipt and integration. |
